IRADe: A hub for Integrated Research and Development




International Training Programme on “Renewable Energy in
Local, National  and Global Context with Socio-economic  Perspectives”

Background and Objectives :

Integrated Research and Action for Development (IRADe) organized a two weeks International Training Program in February-March, 2004 on “Renewable Energy in Local, National and Global Context with Socio-economic Perspectives”. The training was sponsored by Ministry of Non-conventional Energy Sources, Govt. of India. The specific objectives of the international training course were:

  • To give a broad based understanding of renewable energy in the overall context of energy sector planning and global energy and environmental issues.
  • To give national and global energy perspectives and discuss new paradigms   to reduce fossil fuel dependence.
  • Techno-economic understanding of major renewable technologies.
  • To stress the need for approaches that call people’s participation; and hands on experience about energy balance.
The Participants :

Participants were from middle, senior level rank officers (Director, Executive Director, Advisor, Assistant Professor, Assistant lecturer) from ministries, non-governmental organizations and universities. They were from different countries viz. as Algeria, Bangladesh, Indonesia Iran, Nepal, Nigeria, Malawi, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. The participants were from different background and work experiences such as renewable energy and environmental management, natural resource management, environmental geography, energy (oil sector), statistics and environmental health, small hydropower, solar, biomass, energy economics and communication & information.

Course Contents :

The overall content of the training course covered topics such as fundamentals of energy efficiency, techno-economic analysis, biomass gasifier, hydrogen energy, financial evaluation of energy technology, techno-economic assessments of renewable energy, participatory approaches and community based initiatives, clean development mechanism, climate change, entrepreneurship & livelihood, participatory rural energy services and participatory process, gender issues in renewable energy, energy initiatives at community level, health aspects of water and sanitation & health in rural area.
